- As busy as a beaver: extremely busy : cực kỳ bận rộn
- Example: My BFF is as busy as a beaver with the upcoming arduous test. She has no time for anything else.
- As quiet as a mouse: being extremely quiet: im thin thít, không một tiếng động
- Example: She walked into the room as quiet as a mouse
- Take the bull by the horns: face to a difficult or dangerous situation directly and with courage: giải quyết một tình huống khó khăn một cách dũng cảm và mạnh mẽ
- Example: I decide to take the bull by the horns and tell him he was upsetting Jane.
- Do the donkey work: do manual labor or jobs that are routine or least important: làm công việc nặng nhọc, lặp đi lặp lại và nhàm chán
Example: If you tell him to take it easy, he’ll sit back and let you do all the donkey work - Flog/whip a dead horse: waste time on something unlikely to be successful: mất thời gian vào việc sẽ không đạt được kết quả hay thành công gì
- Example: Invest in shares and the chances are you’ll be flogging a dead horse.
- A lion’s share: the largest or best plan of something when it is divided: phần lớn nhất của cái gì đó
- Example: The lion’s share of her money – over 80% – went to her nephews and nieces.
- A stag night: a social/drinking evening for the groom’s male friends prior to the wedding: tiệc độc thân của đàn ông.
- Example: I’m having my stag night on the same day as my Sue is having her hen night.
- Keep the wolf from the door: earn enough to buy food and other essentials: đủ nuôi sống bản thân và gia đình; vừa đủ tiền để trang trải
- Example: If you can’t get a better job, you won’t be able to keep the wolf from the door.
- Dog tired: very tired: rất mệt
- Example: He was dog tired – out on call all night and then took surgery in the morning.
- Let sleeping dogs lie: not interfere; not mention something that could cause trouble: không đề cập tới những chuyện có thể gây ra rắc rối
- Example: She doesn’t need to know he’s been unfaithful. Let sleeping dogs lie.
- Let the cat out of the bag: reveal a secret: tiết lộ bí mật
- Example: He couldn’t keep it secret, let the cat out of the bag and told her everything.
- smell like a rat: sense that something is wrong: nghi ngờ có một điều gì đó sai lầm hay giả dối
- Example: They intended to trick him but they were always larking about and he smelt a rat.
- A wild goose chase: a search that has no chance of success: việc tìm kiếm và theo đuổi điều gì đó rất khó khăn, không tưởng
- Example: I didn’t know her flight number so trying to find Amy at Heathrow was a bit of a wild goose chase.
- Chicken out: Stop participating in something which is too dangerous or difficult: quyết định từ bỏ làm một việc gì đó nguy hiểm
Example: They are short of funds so I think they’re going to chicken out of this project. - A fish out of water: A person who feels uncomfortable or awkward because he or she is in surroundings that are not familiar: cảm thấy lúng túng, không thoải mái trong một môi trường không thân thuộc
- Example: I didn’t know anyone at the reception so I felt like a fish out of water.
16. Have a cow : get extremely upset , angry, worried: cực kỳ buồn, tức giận hay lo lắng
Example: Their parents had a cow when they saw the mess their sons made.
